The Last Great Auk Left Alive

from Possible Confusion Species by Pefkin

/

about

Recorded on harmonium.
The last known great auks were killed on the Icelandic island of Eldey in 1844 for egg / specimen collectors. I made a papier mache great auk for a funeral for the great auk event held for Remembrance of Lost Species day in 2011.
I've long been fascinated and appalled by the story of the great auk and its extinction. "The All-Alone Stone" features several more pieces of music dedicated to the species. For further reading I recommend Errol Fuller's "The Great Auk".
