Observations on Land and Sea

freersounds Pefkin inhabits a realm of mystery and abstraction with just the right level of foreboding. The Sea Is A Mirror is undoubtedly my favourite, with its dense instrumentation and vocals that intertwine with each other in the mist. It really is a journey into the ether. Crested Wavelets on Inland Water is notable for its arresting strings and touching vocals. This is the first time I have written about the Beaufort Scale since school Geography lessons. It is much more exciting in this context! Favorite track: The Sea is a Mirror.

about

Pefkin returns to Sheffield-based micro-label Sonido Polifonico with a mini album of songs based on the descriptions of the effects of the wind on land and sea that feature in the Beaufort Scale.

“At the beginning of 2022, after gigging with Burd Ellen during the autumn, I returned to my solo project of Pefkin, and finding it difficult to get started on making anything meaningful, decided to commit to recording something shorter and simpler, using just one instrument, each night. I would then leave it and decide whether I was going to ditch it or work on it further the following day. I used a couple of synths, violin, array of pedals, found sounds and field recordings. I used the Beaufort Scale descriptions to suggest topics to me for lyrics. The pieces feel more immediate and concise than my more recent work.”

The resulting 5 pieces range from folk-tinged dream-pop awash with bird song, chimes and violin to fogbound ambience riven with a deep sense of unease.
